Cocoa Expos Team History

The Cocoa Expos, founded in 1994 is the Space Coast’s premier USL team.  Since their induction into the Premier Development League, the Cocoa Expos have been one of the most successful teams in the league.  In their first two years in the PDL, the Expos lost just three regular season games.  The Cocoa Expos also played the Tampa Bay Mutiny in their 2001 preseason and lost just 1-0.  In 1995, 1997, 2001 and most recently 2004, the Expos went to the conference finals.  In 1999 and 2003 the Expos went to the conference semifinals.  Prior to the 2005 season, the Expos made two appearances in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, making it to the Second Round each time.  This year in 2005 the Expos went to the Qualifying Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

There have been past Expos players that have gone on to a great deal of success in soccer.  After time spent with the Expos, Richard Sharpe went on to play in Major League Soccer as did Mumbarike Chisoni who spent 2 years with the Expos and now plays with the L.A. Galaxy in Major League Soccer.  English international Ricky Hill also spent time playing with the Expos as did Bryce Wegerle, the nephew of United States international Roy Wegerle.

The Expos team gives young players the opportunity to showcase their talent in a competitive environment.  Many Expos players have gone on to play for top Division I college teams.

For the 2005 season the Expos have 2 previous Major League Soccer players on their roster in Ivan McKinley and Pete Marino.  Ivan McKinley played 7 seasons in Major League Soccer, most recently with the New England Revolution and Pete Marino played for the Columbus Crew and the Kansas City Wizards.

The Cocoa Expos home games are played at the Cocoa Expo Sports Center and the Expos are coached by Gerry Queen. Coach Queen is a member of the Florida Olympic Development Program staff.  Coach Queen’s previous coaching experience ranges from the Orlando Nighthawks of the USL Second Division and the Boca Raton Sabres of the D3 league. Coach Queen has also played professional soccer in Scotland, England and South Africa.
